did you know you can tell if an egg is cooked or not without cracking it? you spin a raw egg and a cooked egg and the one that spins faster is the cooked egg because the raw egg contains liquid with has more of inertia or something.
and the time measurement of "candlemark" is referring back to the old times when they mark the candles regularly (like one mark for every length that takes 15 min to burn or something) so you can tell how much time had passed by how many marks were burnt.
